WINNER ANNOUNCED: MILES CLARKE BUSINESS EVENTS COMMUNICATION AWARD
The winner of this year’s Award was announced at the MEA Annual Awards Dinner in Melbourne on April 20.

Bethany Teulan from Business Events Sydney took out this year’s award with an article entitled

A Highly Commended Certificate went to a joint entry submitted by Olga Junek, Leonie Lockstone and Martin Robertson from Victorian University, entitled:

Miles Clarke Business Events Communication Award
The Business Events Council of Australia is pleased to announce the inaugural Miles Clarke Business Events Communication Award. This is a new award named in honour of the late Miles Clarke, well known writer and media contributor. A perpetual trophy will be presented for the first time at the MEA National Conference, in Adelaide, April 2009.
Miles Clarke was a well known and respected journalist and writer in travel and tourism, specializing in the business events sector. He wrote for general print media and industry trade magazines, and showed a fine understanding of business events issues. Recognised as the best known journalist in the Australian business events industry, and a regular face at industry events for many years, Miles Clarke died suddenly in 2008.
AWARD DETAILS
Scope The aim is to stimulate discussion, to raise the profile, to reward and encourage communication about business events
Criteria
- 1000 words maximum
- May include illustrations, graphs/tables and photographs
- Must be original work, not previously published
- Must relate to business events and could be an opinion piece, examination of a current issue, some new research or a case study demonstrating the impact of a business event.
The Winning Entry The winner will enjoy wide exposure as the winning entry will be published on the websites of BECA and its member organisations including Meetings Events Australia, Exhibition and Events Association of Australia and the Association of Australian Convention Bureaux. It will also be published in print form in Mice.net magazine.
Judges The inaugural Miles Clarke Business Events Communication Award will be judged by Elizabeth Rich, CEO of BECA; Brad Foster, Managing Editor Mice.net magazine and Ian Stuart AFMEA on behalf of MEA.
The deadline for the 2009 Award was 27 February 2009.

BECA announced the winner of the Miles Clarke Business Events Communication Award in Adelaide on 7 April 2009:
Ian Whitworth, from creative marketing consultancy A Lizard Drinking and audiovisual group Scene Change, with an entry entitled "Time to Embrace the Unvirtual: Will the meetings industry still exist in ten years?". Click here to read the article.

Landmark Study Reveals ROI of Business Travel Recent research conducted by global research firm Oxford Economics establishes the first clear link between business travel and business growth as American businesses are planning their 2010 budgets and federal policymakers are looking to stimulate the American economy. For every dollar invested in business travel, businesses experience an average $12.50 in increased revenue and $3.80 in new profits, according to the study.

Commissioned by Hilton Hotels Corporation (Hilton) in Asia, the paper addresses the business and psychological values derived from face-to-face meetings.

TBA Global: The Value of Meetings
TBA Global's new whitepaper “The Value of Meetings” shows the perception issue facing the meetings industry and how companies can make their meetings more appropriate and effective during these times. Also included in the white paper is a collection of data that shows that well executed meetings, designed to meet specific goals, greatly contribute to company profits. The benefits of meetings include the development of engaged employees, improved company culture, more satisfied employees, increased employee retention, and more cost-effective compensation than bonuses.
FaceTime, the newly launched marketing body for the UK’s live events industry, has recently announced the findings of an industry psychological study of the power of consumer and trade shows. The organisation claims that the findings explain how live events work, and reveal the unique attributes of going face-to-face with customers as part of a sales and marketing strategy. The study was undertaken by Cog Research across four major events in the UK during the fourth quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. It comprised 1,160 pre and post interviews of people attending these events. For details, click here.

Green meetings/sustainability
GREEN MEETING GUIDE 2009: This guide, published by the United Nations Environment Programme, is designed to assist organisers and hosts of small-to medium-sized meetings of up to 200 participants in greening their meetings - from partners meetings to small conferences.
The Guide consists of five different elements: Section 1: "Green meetings: what to know" Part A: Introduction - an introduction to the concept of greening meetings, and the benefits this can bring to the organisers, especially UN organisations. Part B: Management and Communication – guidance on management and communication aspects of greening meetings. Part C: Greening your meeting – an overview of the key environmental impacts of a meeting, and how these may be minimised - especially venue selection, accommodation, catering, local transportation, logistics. Part D: Climate neutrality – proposals for offsetting greenhouse gas emissions generated by a meeting, especially through the impacts of long-distance travel in order to leave a positive “Climate Legacy”. Section 2: "Green meetings: what to do" Part E: The Greening Meetings Checklist - detailed greening recommendations for the day to day preparation of a meeting.
