March 2012 - Business travel up six percent

Business Travel On The Rise

The data from TRA’s National Visitor Survey also showed Australians travelling within Australia spent an estimated $43.5 billion during 2011, up two per cent on the previous year.

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, said the figures come on the back of a challenging year for domestic tourism with a persistently high Australian dollar and natural disasters such as floods and cyclone Yasi.

"This growth, not just in dollars spent by visitors, but also the number of nights spent away from home, is very welcome," said Minister Ferguson.

"It shows the resilience of the tourism industry and highlights the opportunities for the sector presented by business travel."

Business travel was up six per cent to almost 14 million trips, with nights up four per cent and expenditure up seven per cent to $7.7 billion.
