BECA Appoints New Chair

Ton van Amerongen to Chair Business Events Council of Australia

The Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) has announced the appointment of Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre Chief Executive Ton van Amerongen as its new Chair.

The position was confirmed at a BECA Board meeting in Sydney on Friday, which also saw Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre General Manager Bob O’Keeffe made Treasurer.

In other appointments, the CEO and Creative Director of Lateral Event Management, Simon Baggs, and the Managing Director of Diversified Communications Asia, Matt Pearce, have both joined the nine-member BECA board.

Adelaide Convention Bureau CEO Damien Kitto will retain his position as Deputy Chair.

Meanwhile, the BECA Council, which works alongside the Board, also has two new faces, with Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre CEO Peter King and Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre General Manager Adrienne Readings both joining the body.

Mr van Amerongen will replace the outgoing BECA Chair, Jon Hutchison.

Welcoming the new Board and Council members, BECA Executive Manager Inge Garofani said she was delighted at the breadth of experience offered by industry members sitting on the two bodies.

“In particular, I am very pleased to welcome Ton to the position of Chair.  Ton has enormous industry knowledge and will be a real asset to BECA and its members as we continue to work to broaden awareness of the important economic role the business events sector plays,” Ms Garofani said.

“2013 will be a year of opportunity for BECA as we continue to focus on the core areas of research and advocating support for business events. Ton will continue the excellent contribution made by Jon Hutchison and I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with him.”

Mr van Amerongen has been Chief Executive of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre for 18 years following a career in hotel management which included positions as Resident Manager of the then Regent Sydney and Opening General Manager the city’s Park Lane Hotel.

Earlier this month Mr van Amerongen was awarded the Exhibition & Event Association of Australasia’s Trevor Riddell President’s Award for his contribution to the exhibition industry during his time at the helm of the Centre.

He holds positions as councilor with the Sydney Chamber of Commerce and advisor to Business Events Sydney, and is a founding director of the Darling Harbour Business Association, a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a member of the Tourism and Transport Forum, the International Congress and Convention Association and the Exhibition and Events Association of Australia
